Work package description
The NeTTUN Consortium has been assembled to address a challenging set of research themes and objectives. Each beneficiary in the Consortium – Industrial, Research and Development and SME – has been invited to participate because of their unique scientific expertise and tunnelling sector experience. Their combined input will ensure that the Consortium has all the necessary expertise to address the ambitious goals of NeTTUN and thus those of the EC.
The NeTTUN 54 months project has nine technical Work Pakages (WP) that are detailed in the Description of Work.
Together they address challenges (1 – 6) outlined as follows:
- An advanced multi-sensor ground prediction system for the Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) to enable fast, frequent and effective look-ahead during boring;
- A robust robotic maintenance system that enables the automation of routine tasks (e.g. inspection and exchange of drag bits and disc cutters);
- The design of cutter tools with effective increased lifetime;
- A novel system for modeling of global risks on tunnel projects in order to quantify and manage the many uncertainties faced during tunnelling;
- A suite of systems for modeling and thus controlling the impact of tunnelling on surrounding structures;
- The creation of a Decision Support system for tunnel maintenance management.
WP 3/4/5 address challenge (1), an Advanced Ground Prediction System for TBMs by intelligently fusing, interpreting and visualising seismic and radar sensors;
WP 6 researches and develops advanced robotics for TBM maintenance;
WP 7 will design cutter tools with a greatly increased lifetime;
WP 8 will model global risks on tunnel projects;
WP 9 will investigate how to model and control the impact of tunnelling on surrounding structures;
WP 10 will research and develop a decision support system for tunnel maintenance management.
Finally, WP 11 will evaluate and test all these aspects of NeTTUN in real operations.
For each NeTTUN WP, multiple beneficiaries will collaborate, bringing complementary expertise to realise systems well beyond the current state of the art to demonstrate real progress that can be utilised to the benefit of the tunnelling sector across Europe, and for European industry, and research and development to compete globally.
