TULIPS (Tunnel Look-ahead Imaging Prediction System)

The objective of this work package is to present the Radar and Seismic data output from the hardware created in WP3 and WP4 in an informative and usable way. This requires data pre-processing, data fusion (combining volumetric GPR, planar GPR and seismic modalities of different frequencies), and visualization. Software developed will present both raw and fused data in such a way as to inform both manual and potentially automatic decision making.

Data fusion will work on two levels: i) analysis of data on a volumetric basis to combine modalities and detect material properties and boundaries at all spatial locations; ii) analysis and detection of abnormal or interesting structures, such as building foundations, rocks etc. Development and evaluation data will be available from two sources; Physical simulations using prepared ground and real sensors (WP3 and WP4), and Computer simulations (Task 5.1).

A number of different scenarios have been identified in NeTTUN; each scenario represents a different type of situation which we hope the ground prediction system TULIPS will be able to detect through the combined seismics and GPR sensing system being developed in WP3 and WP4.  The video above visualizes a simulated version of each of the  scenarios in 3D from different angles; the location of the TBM is is given by the cyan circle.
