The University of Leeds has over 30,500 full time students from over 130 different countries. With 8,800 staff this makes the University the third largest employer in Leeds. Based within the Faculty of Engineering, the School of Computing at Leeds has been at the forefront of the emergence and development of computer science as a discipline for nearly 60 years. The 2008 Research Assessment Exercise confirmed its place as one of the Top Ten computing departments in the UK. All of its work was confirmed as of international standard with 80% identified as internationally excellent or world-leading (3* or 4*). Over the past eight years, the School has attracted grants from each of the seven UK Research Councils as well as Government departments, the European Union, DARPA, and many industrial sources, including the UK mapping agency, the Ordnance Survey. The School is home to a large community including over 30 research staff and 70 research students working as groups within dedicated research laboratories.
