The Università di Roma Tor Vergata was established in 1981 and is a large research-based institution with emphasis in the fields of Economics, Engineering, Sciences and Medicine. It is composed of 28 Departments and 6 Schools with a total annual budget of about 500 million €. It has 26,252 full-time students, 1,544 teaching and research staff and 962 auxiliary personnel.

The University has 6 libraries with very wide electronic subscription. Based within the School of Engineering, the Dipartimento di Ingegneria Civile includes 59 research staff, 19 auxiliary personnel and about 40 research students working within 5 dedicated research laboratories (Structural, Geotechnical, Environmental, Building, and Medical Engineering). The Department has carried out research with public and private funding in the fields of medical, environmental, hydraulic, structural and geotechnical engineering, continuum and fluid mechanics, constitutive and numerical modelling, for a total value of about 1.8 million € on 80 research projects in year 2009.
