NFM Technologies is a French headquartered, high-tech mechanical engineering firm in the heavy industries sector. The larger part of its activities and expertise are focused on the design and manufacturing of Tunnel Boring Machines. The company also specialises in one-off large mechanical systems working in highly diversified sectors like aeronautics-defence, nuclear power, petrol-gas, as well as in Underground work. NFM employs 260 people with the head office (150 people) located in Lyon, overseeing company administration, project management, the R&D department, design offices and an international customer service centre. The manufacturing plant (110 people) based in Le Creusot incorporates the manufacture, assembly, integration and testing of TBMs, and also heavy machinery handling equipment. Since 2007, NFM is partly owned by the Chinese group NHI. NFM exports European expertise and machinery for the tunnelling industry to the Chinese market which currently represents 50% approx. of the world TBM volume. NHI’s production and site support activities in China afford unique work site experience feedback for NFM’s Lyon based Research & Development team to adapt TBM customized and innovative technologies to international market requirements. NFM’s Research & Development division pursues their lines of research on Risk Reduction by improving the performance, reliability, safety and quality of TBM equipment.

NFM offers a complete range of TBMs from 4 m to more than 15 m in diameter, based on all state-of-the art operations modes: open mode (hard rock) single and double shields, closed mode Earth Pressure Balance (EPB) and slurry (Benton’Air®), and dual-modes machines. NFM TBMs cover all types of geology with excellent performance as demonstrated by some of the records achieved including world’s fastest EPB: Madrid metro (Spain) Ø 9.38 m with a best month of 1030 m; and world records of advance rates in hard rock with double shield TBM: Yin Tao tunnel 9 (China), Ø 5.75 m, with best day 86.7 m and best month 1463 m.
