The group participating in the NeTTUN project consists of two faculty members (Associate Professor Michael Kavvadas and Associate Professor Vasilios Papadopoulos), three postdoctoral researchers with Ph.D. in the field of tunnelling and numerical modelling and five Ph.D. candidates working in 3-D finite element numerical analyses, development of constitutive laws forgeo-materials and tunnelling. The group includes one female Ph.D. candidate (Ms. Smaragda Efthimiou).

Prof. Michael Kavvadas is the Group Coordinator and Team Leader for the NTUA Research Group. Prof. Kavvadas holds a Ph.D. from MIT and has served for 25 years as Faculty Member in the School of Civil Engineering at NTUA. He is currently the Director of a Postgraduate Course entitled “Design and Construction of Underground Works” organized jointly by the Departments of Civil Engineering and Mining Engineering of NTUA. He has authored over 200 papers in referred journals and international conferences. He has extensive research and practical experience in the numerical analysis of tunnels and has served as Technical Consultant of the European Union in several EU funded tunnelling projects in Greece (e.g. Kallidromo railway tunnel, Athens Metro project).

Prof. Vasilios Papadopoulos is the Principal Researcher for the NTUA Research Group. He holds a Ph.D. from NTUA and has served for 30 years as Faculty Member in the Department of Civil Engineering at NTUA. He has significant experience in design of shallow tunnels and specializes in the analysis of the effects of shallow tunnels on structures at ground surface. He also has significant experience as a geotechnical consultant in tunnelling projects.

Dr. George Belokas (postdoctoral researcher) has completed his Ph.D. in NTUA in the field of numerical analyses and constitutive modelling. He also holds a Diploma in Civil Engineering from NTUA and an M.Sc./DIC in Soil Mechanics from Imperial College London. He has worked as a researcher and consultant for almost 15 years.

Dr. Petros Fortsakis (postdoctoral researcher) has completed his Ph.D. research in NTUA in the field of tunnelling. He also holds a Diploma in Civil Engineering and an M.Sc. in Structural Engineering from NTUA. He has participated in the design of two tunnels and several design reviews.

Dr. George Prountzopoulos (postdoctoral researcher) has completed his Ph.D. research in NTUA in the field of tunnelling. He also holds a Diploma in Civil Engineering and an M.Sc. in Tunnelling from NTUA. He has participated in the design of two tunnels and several design reviews.

Mr. Panagiotis Sitarenios is a Ph.D. Candidate working on the constitutive modelling and numerical analysis of unsaturated soils. He holds a Diploma in Civil Engineering from the University of Patras and an M.Sc. in Tunnelling from NTUA. He has also participated in the design of 4 new tunnels (Artemisio, Sterna, Neochori and Kalogeriko) constructed in Greece within the last five years.

Mr. Alexandros Kalos is a Ph.D. Candidate in the Geotechnical Department of NTUA working on the numerical analysis and constitutive modelling of geomaterials (soft clays and rock mass) exhibiting significant creep behaviour. He holds a Diploma in Civil Engineering from NTUA and an M.Sc. from Georgia Institute of Technology.

Mr. Konstantinos Tzivakos is a Ph.D. Candidate in the Geotechnical Department of NTUA. His thesis is on the numerical analysis of laterally loaded piles and he has significant experience in coupled 3D finite element analysis.  He holds a Diploma in Civil Engineering and an M.Sc.  in Structural Engineering from NTUA.

Ms. Smaragda Efthymiou is a Ph.D. Candidate in the Geotechnical Department of NTUA. She holds an M.Sc./DIC in Soil Mechanics from Imperial College London and she is currently working on the laboratory investigation and constitutive modeling of fly ash treated soils.

Mr. Dimitrios Litsas is a Ph.D. Candidate in the Geotechnical Department of  NTUA working in the numerical analysis of TBM excavated tunnels. He holds a Diploma in Civil Engineering and an M.Sc. in Structural Engineering from NTUA. He has significant experience in the application of stochastic techniques in geotechnical problems.
